June 4 is the date at Roberts Lake in Rohnert Park from 9a-1p or however long people want to stay.Hope to have a good turn out and catch some fish. Scouts shouldn't need a license, but any one over 15 yrs. of age would need one. It can be a yearly or day license. I plan of bringing a few extra poles and plenty of tackle to retie. I encourage all that attend to bring lighter fishing poles with Spinning Reels and 6-8lbs. line. We will be fishing for Trout, Bass, Blue-Gill, Catfish, and anything else that bites. Berkley Power Bait is a good bait for novice anglers to bring along for most fish, I will bring some as well.

Camping Season is upon us!

Many of us went to Camp Masonite Navarro
over Memorial Day Weekend, for Family Camp. It was a lot of fun!

There are several more camping opportunities this summer, including a repeat Family Camp, Resident Camp and Twilight Camps. Many of our pack are going to the Penngrove Twilight Pack, but there are several others if Penngrove does not fit your schedule.

This year we have two opportunities to attend "Scout Day" with either the Oakland Athletics on Sunday May 1st, or with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday July 24th. This is great activity for scouts and their parents to spend time together! It’s also an awesome opportunity for scouts to march in the pre-game parade down on the field!
A short description of each event is below. The deadline for our decision is just a few days away so if everyone could please let me know as soon as you can which event you would be more interested in, if you’re available for either one, or if you think you won’t be able to make it at all. This way we can have an accurate idea of everyone’s availability. Tickets are $20.00.

The official scale will be here along with a wheel gauge to measure spacing. There will also be extra wheels and axels for anyone that needs them. Leaders will be on hand from 1 to 4PM to help with minor adjustments if necessary.

Please note: No work will be allowed on the cars on race day. This is your last chance to ensure the cars meet all required specifications.

Race Day Pack Meeting at Parkside School Multi Room

Registration will be from 1-1:45pm

We need your cooperation to come early, so the first cars can roll at 1:45.
Bring cars to the Pack Meeting ready to be surrendered to the Race Officials.
Cars not meeting final specifications at registration will not be permitted to compete.
There will be an open heat for family and friends, so bring your cars.
Cars not moving on to District Races will be returned at the end of the Pack Meeting.
Cars that advance to district for Best of Show and/or Strait Speed will be retained by the
Pack and not returned until after the District Races.

Race day activities

Cool Neckerchief Slides- Bring a matchbox car and make a cool neckerchief slide.
Snacks for Sale- Support the Pack, and buy pizza by the slice and other yummy snacks during the race.
Best of Show Voting- All cars will be on display for the selected impartial race officials to vote for Best of Show. So make sure the paint shines, and there are no bugs on the front grill.

Pack 128 comes through with its Fair Share!

Our awesome Pack 128 came through with a solid commitment to the Fair Share / Friends of Scouting Campaign—100% participation!

Our contributions totaled $4,655 to date,

which works out to $113 per Cub Scout.

This represents a huge increase over prior year contributions and brings us very close the actual cost of providing a rewarding program for our sons and grandsons.

Thank you to one and all for your enthusiastic participation.

Numerous people have asked me why these contributions are necessary. The bottom line is that it costs approximately $150 for the Council to provide all the support services that are needed to keep each boy in the Scouting program. These services include insurance, tour permits, several camps (Masonite Navarro, Noyo and Riggs Johnson) and all the great training that is needed so that we can provide a quality program to our boys at the Pack level. Many of these services are provided by unpaid volunteers and other donations are received from the community and businesses. We the parents and grandparents need to be willing to pay the balance of the cost so that our boys benefit from a quality program. $150 may sound like a lot of money, but it is only $2.88 per week—less than one cup of coffee! Aren’t our boys worth that investment?

The breakfast goes from 7-12 am on Sunday, Oct. 17.

It is held at the Sebastopol Fire Department fire house on the opposite corner from Parkside school on Bodega Ave.

The fire department is our Charter organization. That means that they are responsible for our Pack, so this would be great goodwill, plus an opportunity for public outreach.

Sherry Kearney recognized by Rotary

At the Sept. 15, 2010 meeting of the Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise, former Pack 128 leader Sherry Kearney was presented with the Service to Youth award. Rotary member and active scout leader/parent Mike Baldus presented Sherry with the award.

The Rotary Club presents this award on an annual basis to a few volunteers in the community who go above and beyond in their efforts on behalf of our youth.

Sherry was recognized for her activities in Pack 128—helping to get the pack re-chartered and then holding multiple leadership positions for several years.

Rotary has been a very strong supporter of our Scouting activities in West County.

Congrats Sherry! Your efforts have been integral to the success of Pack 128!

New Cub Scout meeting themes

NEW CUB SCOUT PROGRAM FOR 2010‐11 SCHOOL YEAR

You probably have heard that National BSA is rolling out a new Cub Scouting program for the 2010‐11 school year.

In researching these changes, this program is much like what some of our most successful Den Leadershave been doing for years: creating Den meetings designed around advancement in the Tiger, Wolf,Bear and Webelos handbooks.

The National Council has made these updates to the Cub Scout program to make something good even better. Over the past four years there have been pilot projects to try out these new changes, so they are well tested, with input from over 11,000 Cub Scout Den Leaders nationwide. In the pilot study, Cub Scout retention has increased from 65% to 87% annually, meaning if this program is successful for everyone, 300,000 more boys will stay in Scouting in the USA each year, and will receive more of the character development enrichment that Scouting is known for.

In the pilot study, 60% of Den Leaders said that the new program has increased their confidence in delivering the Cub Scout program to their den, 80% said that the resources makes meeting preparation easier and that they are satisfied with the activities and resources, 95% would recommend the new program to other Den Leaders, and 97% were satisfied with the resources provided.

National BSA has been working diligently to refine this program, to make it the best it can be. Hopefully, it will help your Pack and Dens be even more successful, and your adult leaders will find their Scouting experience even more rewarding, as they teach and serve the Cub Scouts in their dens, and watch their boys grow into fine young men.

Pack 128: Going Strong in Sebastopol, Giving Back in Time of Need

Like so many parents, as our son Orion headed into first grade, we began to think about how to support his transition from early boyhood to becoming a responsible, respectful, skilled member of the community. It was my husband’s uncle, Dr. Rob Nelson, who suggested we join the Boy Scouts. Last December on our way into the grocery store, we bought mistletoe from a pair of enthusiastic Scouts, picked up a form to enroll in Sebastopol Troop Pack 128, and have been charmed ever since by the group’s enthusiasm and core values.

As an Eagle Scout, Uncle Rob decided to sponsor Orion’s involvement. When Orion earned his Bobcat Award, Uncle Rob flew down from Seattle to be there. Impressed by this show of loyalty, I spent an hour interviewing Uncle Rob about his scouting experience.

Before answering my initial question, Rob referred to the meeting he attended in Sebastopol when the pack turned in its donations for their spring food drive:

Before I say anything else, I just want the public to know the Cub Scouts of Sebastopol are hard at work collecting food for the needy and very aware of their community needs. It was a rewarding experience to have my great nephew join the Cub Scouts and receive his Bobcat Award having been a scout myself in the late 50s when I was attending Monte Rio Union School. I was in town for the summer before a trip to Africa (as the child of diplomats), and barely got into it here in California; 3 years later, I went to Sweden and got into the Swedish Scouts.

I kind of got myself into scouting as some friends of mine in the neighborhood had joined; I asked my mom if she’d buy a t-shirt and neckerchief…and she did. The scouts got me into the idea of going out camping, pitching a tent, and fishing and cooking outdoors. I made lifelong friends in scouting.

What was it like being a Boy Scout in Sweden?

They would take 15 or so of us scouts between the ages of 9 and 18 years old and two headmasters. We’d get on a train and ride out about an hour and a half, at which point the train would make a special unscheduled stop. Basically, we got off in the middle of nowhere.

The Scoutmaster divided us into two groups and handed us each a map and a compass. Since by then it was night, we had to find the pinprick on the map and line it up to find our bearings. One group went one way, and the other, the opposite direction. Once you made it to your first location, there’d be a little box and another map with a pinprick. You’d hit 3 or 4 stations like this until at last you found the leaders waiting with a large bonfire and a cleared area for the tents. Either you got lost and camped alone or you found your way.

The Swedes were very into living off nature; we ate mushrooms we’d found and wrapped them in bacon to cook over the fire. Scouting in Sweden was an eye-opener. We’d check our water: stagnant or running, and had to make a fire without any matches.

Were you a Scout in any other countries?

I managed to Scout in Africa, Scandinavia, and Greece in the Mediterranean. Every country has scouts and hosts jamboree encampments that bring together districts and countries all over the world. So no matter what country you visit, they will have a jamboree calling together all scouts

And the fun part for me of those camping experiences in other countries was to learn about the flora and fauna of the country and share camping experiences with other scouts; it is a brotherhood. You learn the language, the customs, and the culture simultaneously.

Any final words of advice?

I loved scouting so much I continued on all the way through from scout, to explorer, to Eagle. I realize the rigors but I’m also keenly aware of the benefits of scouting and it is a well-rounded program that helps kids with camaraderie, building community, discipline, and speaking in front of a group.

Later in life if one chooses a military career, there are a lot of benefits of having been a scout. When I joined the military, my very first day, I was given charge of half of the group of starting men because I had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout; I was automatically given the rank of E3. Once Orion starts earning his merit badges, they not only look cool, but they’re fun to have. I’m very proud of him getting his Bobcat Badge; he’s on his way to learning many skills and earning many more badges. Orion is at the beginning of a great adventure. I’m proud to participate in it with him.

Camp Masonite Navarro, Memorial Day Weekend

Nestled under the redwoods less than a two hour drive from Sebastopol, Camp Masonite Navarro proved to be a beautiful home to a strong showing from Pack 128 this past Memorial Day Weekend Family Camp. Campers had the option to put up tents out in the open, lodge in three-walled Adirondack cabins up above the dining lodge, or set up down below by the front entrance in fully enclosed cabins with bunk-beds.

Charming and enthusiastic staff headed up a range of activities including archery, nature hiking, climbing-wall, swimming and BB and Shot-gun shooting. The handicraft booth offered t-shirt making (relief prints of leaves and ferns) and the making of tic-tac-toe boards. Nature hikers were able to make their own plaster prints of various paw-prints (skunk, raccoon, fox). Staff kept younger scouts and siblings occupied with games during Shotgun Shoot (14 and over only).

A presentation by The Mountain Man informed us of the 400 lb. cinnamon brown bear known to help himself to the dumpsters after campers vacate the area, impressing further the need to keep food out of tents and cabins and safely stowed in vehicles. There were no bear sightings, other than the few brave scouts and their parents attending the 6:15 a.m. polar bear swim (during which real, live, salmon roe were sighted).

Scouts and their tag-along sisters had the option of taking a cooking class for the making of blood-n-guts cookies with kitchen manager Mitzi, who put together excellent, well rounded meals for all our starving campers. (For example, breakfast included sausage, eggs, hot oatmeal, dry cereal, juice, milk, fruit…etc. Dinner was just as good: braised chicken and hot mashed potatoes with salad and rolls and always enough for seconds). For inbetween snacks, the Trading Post offered a nice selection of ice-cream, candy, and camping incidentals such as rope and had a cash optional/token optional system set up for youngsters still learning to track money.

Evening campfire began with a solemn, silent walk down a winding path into the tree amphitheater. Lining the path were Scouts at attention; beside each Scout, candlelight from lanterns illuminated wooden signs, each listing one key word (Loyal, Brave, Thrifty, etc.). Once the fires were lit, the mood shifted from reverent to playful and the cheerful Scouts in charge kept the crowd (an estimated 180 or so participants) on their feet mimicking, up in front taking part in skits, or listening and laughing. What a fun way to usher in the summer--so many of our families together in the woods, learning new skills and enjoying one another's company along the way.

We had a few ideas for next family camp: 1) remember to bring a watch (so you can be on time to Flag Ceremonies morning and night) and 2) perhaps as a Pack we could consider setting up some kind of compost project so we can put to good use the camp’s substantial food leftovers. And please, add your reflections and suggestions if we missed anything here.

District Pinewood Derby results

Today was the Pinewood Derby for the Pomo District, which includes most of Sonoma County. Pack 128 sent the top three finishers from each den...

Our own Tiger Dakota Sloan beat all the other District Tigers and got First Place in his division. Good Job Dakota.

The other Pack 128 cars had a good showing, and narrowly lost out to the top 4 finishers in each division. Congratulations to all the scouts!
